What Did We Do This Summer?
Hint: There Were Stormtroopers
Sep 13, 2017
The days are getting shorter, the nights are getting cooler, and the end of summer is near. Before we dive into Fall Fun – football, corn mazes, Thanksgiving, and pumpkin spice (well, that last one is debatable), let’s look back at what we did this summer.
The A-Team keeps growing
We added more new faces! In June, Mike and Julian joined our healthcare group, building software that improves the patient experience. After graduating from Loyola, Jessa and Ned joined The A-Team, putting their newly minted Computer Science degrees to good use.
New interns Sam and Thomas hit the ground running, and decided to stick around for the rest of the school year. Senior Systems Engineer and GoT superfan Sherri came on board, and most recently, Zach joined our analytics division.
Last but not least, our new telepresence robot, FarleyBot (or is it Botty McBotFace?) now roams the halls. Employees working from home can dial in, drive Botty to standup meetings, and collaborate with (or sneak up on) their teammates.
We always look forward to our annual Family Star Wars Night with the Bowie Baysox. A-Teamers and their families have the chance to dress up, watch a ballgame and fireworks, maybe even get into a light saber battle or two.
This year, Asymmetrik secured a box, which allowed parents to eat, drink, and be merry while the kids hung out with Chewie, Darth Vader and Stormtroopers.
Next, CTO Amit and CFO Lori ushered in July by grilling up burgers and sausages during our 4th of July cookout. We’re thrilled that so many members of The A-Team’s extended family came to enjoy food, fun, and cornhole!
We managed to squeeze in a field trip to see summer’s biggest movie, Wonder Woman (loved it). After that, our hard-working interns enjoyed their very own laser tag outing. We pitted them against former interns and managers, then capped the night off with a fantastic Indian dinner at Royal Taj.
Of course, we can’t do a post about summer without mentioning the solar eclipse. A few employees ventured to Oregon and South Carolina for amazing 100% views of the eclipse. Even though we only saw 80% from Maryland, we marked the occasion with a viewing party, complete with eclipse-themed foods (mmm, Moon Pies).
It’s All About Balance
But, this summer wasn’t just about fun and games. Our team worked on building their technical skills too. A shout out to Kristen, who spoke at the UXPA International Conference in Toronto. Other A-Teamers also took advantage of our education stipend to attend conferences, going to MacAdmins, DefCon, Blackhat, Big Boulder, and MongoDBWorld, just to name a few.
We all know that learning, personal growth, and fun are essential to living a meaningful life. That’s why it’s important to us to create a workplace that supports a high quality of life for our employees and their families. So, if you’ve lost your sense of joie de vivre lately, maybe it’s time to get it back.
