The A-Team: Sylvia Swinson
Meet an Asymmetrik ISSO
Mar 24, 2021
This month, we’re shining a spotlight on Sylvia Swinson: network security expert, music maven, and super sports fan.
After serving for over 20 years in U.S. Army, Sylvia retired from the military and began her second career in network security. Eventually, that lead to a career as an ISSO, or Information System Security Officer. Sylvia loves her work, which involves researching, documenting and implementing network security to prevent unauthorized system access and exposure. She also loves being part of mission-driven and focused small team, which is what ultimately led her to join The A-Team last year.
Here, we get to know Sylvia and what makes her tick!
Hobbies and Interests
When she’s not working, Sylvia loves to travel to scenic, relaxing places with a good book and good friends. She enjoys it all, “whether it’s cabin trips to Tennessee or the Shenandoah mountains, a big ol’ beach house in the Outer Banks or a quiet villa in Tuscany where we can enjoy great sisterhood, amazing food, and plenty of wine.”
But even more than travel, Sylvia’s first love might be sports. In fact, some of her best memories are attending the Washington Mystics 2019 WNBA championship, as well as Game 4 of the Washington Nationals 2019 World Series run with her daughter Sherae.
Not surprisingly, Sylvia passed her love of sports on to Sherae, especially basketball. And, Sherae took it one step further as she “perfected the game enough to earn several AAU and high school awards that led to a 4-year Division I scholarship to attend Binghamton University, NY.” The best part? When coaches asked Sherae, “Who taught you how to shoot?” her response was, proudly, “My mom”.
Sylvia is passionate about giving back to the community, so whether it’s through donating time, funds, or sharing her knowledge and talents, she pays it forward whenever possible. Recently, she’s been involved in several non-profits that help improve the lives of girls, including G.I.R.L.S Inc, which provides mentoring relationships, advocacy, and programs to help girls grow up healthy, educated, and independent.
She is also involved with World Computer Exchange (WCE), which provides resources to help teachers in developing African countries increase digital access and teach computer literacy to students. And through WCE, Sylvia supports the Inspire Girls project which aims to inspire and support girls in pursuing technology careers.
Lastly, Sylvia supports a cause close to her own heart since her mother is a two-time breast cancer survivor. “I have participated in many cancer walks that include Susan G. Komen 3-day 60-mile cancer walks in Dallas and Philly. I was scheduled to participate in San Diego in October 2020, but it was canceled due to the COVID pandemic. My ultimate goal is to complete the 3-day 60-mile event in every city that sponsors Susan G. Komen.”
- She co-owned a music entertainment company: “As much as I love music, I never imagined I would be co-owner of a music entertainment company and manage independent artists creating musical events throughout the DMV, NC and promote our own sold-out show in the UK. I was also fortunate enough to tour internationally with a very close friend and artist to London, Paris, and Liverpool, home of the Beatles.”
- She was a drill sergeant in the Army: Sylvia served two years in this role, while at Fort Gordon, GA. And, she was the only female drill sergeant selected from Fort Gordon to train ROTC candidates at Fort Knox, KY.
- She really loves sports memorabilia: Yep – her love of sports goes beyond playing and watching. To date, Sylvia has collected over 15,000 sports trading cards!
