Hobbies at Asymmetrik
What Makes Us Tick
Jun 11, 2018
One of our favorite things about Asymmetrik is the creativity and energy of our employees, both inside and outside of work. From rallycross to conjuring up magic with yeast and flour, there’s a wide range of hobbies that make The A-Team tick. Over the next few months, we’ll be featuring all the different passions that drive our employees. Let’s take a look at what we’ve been making in our office lately.
Like many people, Scott, Mike and Todd love a good loaf of warm bread. Although the three had limited baking experience, they weren’t deterred and decided to experiment with a bread machine in the office kitchen.
Their first project, a simple Italian loaf, was a huge success. Since then, they’ve branched out into fancier experiments: herb bread, french bread, cinnamon raisin, and lemon poppyseed. And for that, our entire team thanks them!
Every month, we share knowledge and ideas during Brown Bag Learning sessions. Anyone can host a session, which can be about something you want to teach others or something you want to learn more about. Though usually technical, they’re not always – like when we had a session about needle felting.
If you’re not familiar with needle felting, it involves poking piles of wool fiber with needles. This process knots the wool densely, allowing it to be formed into whatever shape you like. Heather, Andrew, Toni and Juliana decided to create chickens during this Brown Bag. Next project: crafting our mascot Farley the Black Sheep out of wool – because, well, of course.
Jody, Marcus, Andrew, Bryan, Peter, Randy, and Dave are Farley and The Black Sheep, our house band. They’ve treated us to their artistic stylings during our annual Holiday Happy Hour, and during the Chili Cookoff.
Call us biased, but this might just be the best accordion/bassoon/sax/guitar/bass/drums septet in the Annapolis Junction area. Feel free to check out their healthcare parody of Billy Joel’s “We Didn’t Start the Fire”!
A lot of our employees love growing things. So, we invited plant experts B.Willow to our office to present a workshop on building terrariums.
Like most Asymmetrik events, this was open to The A-Team and their families as well. Kids and kid-like adults spent the afternoon creating self-contained ecosystems out of soil, rocks, sand, mica and greenery. It was a great reminder to take time out to stop and smell the roses, er, moss.
When we got a 3D printer for the office, our employees immediately got to work designing and printing objects. Some were really useful, like badge holders, while others were somewhat debatable (like giant chickens and rocket ships).
To encourage others who didn’t have any 3D Printing experience, A-Team member Bud hosted two happy hours (also open to family and friends) to share how to get started. We can’t wait to see what’s in store next!
Joie De Vivre
No matter what they’re into, one trait that everyone at Asymmetrik has in common is joie de vivre, or “enjoyment of life”. It’s one of the things that makes our company so special, and it’s something that we look for when we hire new members to join our team. If you want to work alongside others who will inspire you, push you to go further, and nourish your creativity, take a look at our openings. It might just be time for a breath of fresh air!
